    1) When Mr. Clark asks if Mr. Hooper is ready to lift the veil that shuts in time from eternity, what does the veil represent?

The veil that separates time from eternity represents life. When Mr. Hooper is on his deathbed, Mr. Clark arrives. He inquires about the figurative veil that Mr. Hooper wears: “’Venerable Father Hooper,’ said he, ‘the moment of your release is at hand. Are you ready for the lifting of the veil that shuts in time from eternity?’” (Minister’s Black Veil 14). Mr. Clark is not talking about the actual black veil that Mr. Hooper wears. He means the veil that all living creatures’ souls wear. It separates these creatures’ souls from reaching the eternity of heaven. When the veil is lifted, it allows their souls to travel on to live eternity in heaven.

    2) What causes the congregation to abhor Mr. Hooper's black veil?

When the congregation first sees Mr. Hooper wearing the black veil, they are shocked. When Mr. Hooper later makes it clear that he does not intend to remove it, they begin to suspect that he is hiding something: “But that piece of crape, to their imagination, seemed to hang down before his heart, the symbol of a fearful secret between him and them” (Minister’s Black Veil 10). The people also hate the veil because of the sense of mystery that it evokes. Mr. Hooper speaks of this mystery while on his deathbed: “’What, but the mystery which it obscurely typifies, has made this piece of crape so awful?’” (Minister’s Black Veil 15). The congregation does not know why he is wearing it, so they automatically hate it.

    1) What does Mr. Hooper's black veil represent?

The black veil represents the wall that hides ones’ sins. When Mr. Hooper begins to wear it, he is enabled with the power to see through other’s figurative veils. When one is faced with death, all of their sins are revealed: “…all of mortal race, might be ready…for the dreadful hour that should snatch the veil from their faces” (Minister’s Black Veil 8). When these intangible veils are removed, they won’t be able to conceal their sins anymore. They must own up to them and accept that they are not perfect. Mr. Hooper’s black veil represents the sins that all men try to hide.

    2) What causes the congregation to abhor Mr. Hooper's black veil?

The congregation does not like Mr. Hooper’s black veil because of the sense of secrecy that it evoked. It seemed like he was hiding something from his congregation. If Mr. Hooper’s role was that of a spiritual leader, the people want to have a trustful relationship with him. Holding a secret from his parishioners would feel like a breach of trust to them. One parishioner comments on the veil, “’I don’t like it…He has changed himself into something awful, only by hiding his face’” (Minister’s Black Veil 6). The congregation feels like Mr. Hooper’s hiding something, which causes them to dislike the veil.

    1. Mr. Hooper's black veil represents something that separates us from the world.

His wife to be rejects him because of his black veil. Mr. Hooper explains that in the afterlife he will no longer have the veil. She rejects his love. I pity Mr. Hooper because a veil should not just stop loving him because of the veil.

  4. 2. The people are afraid of Mr. Hooper in his black veil because they think he is tricking them and that he might be crazy. Mr. Hooper will not tell them why he is wearing the black veil. The people do not understand until he is dying and will not take off the veil. They realize then when he explains why he has worn it for so long.
The black veil is strange, which confuses people. Many things that are different in today’s society can cause people to be confused and not to talk. Some people are handicap or do not have the same family background or wear strange clothes, so we do not talk to them because they make us uncomfortable.

    1) What does Mr. Hooper's black veil represent?

The veil represents a bridge between life and death. Many of the parishioners speak of the mythology surrounding Mr. Hooper: “The impertinence…compelled him to give up his customary walk at sunset to the burial ground; for when he leaned pensively over the gate, there would always be faces behind the gravestones, peeping at his black veil. A fable went the rounds that the stare of the dead people drove him thence” (Minister’s Black Veil 12). They believe that when he walks through the cemetery, the stare of the dead people drives him to wear the veil. When people are dying, they always call out for Mr. Hooper: “Dying sinners cried aloud for Mr. Hooper, and would not yield their breath till he appeared…” (Minister’s Black Veil 13). Although they appreciated Mr. Hooper’s presence, they still feared the veil. For them, Mr. Hooper is the gateway to heaven. They must confess their sins to him in order to gain forgiveness before they move on to the afterlife. The veil represents a medium through which souls are transported to heaven.

    2) What causes the congregation to abhor Mr. Hooper's black veil?

The veil allows Mr. Hooper to see everyone’s sins, which causes the congregation not to like him. They dread the possibility that all of their private evils will be exposed for the world to see. Dying people fear Mr. Hooper the most: “…as he stooped to whisper consolation, they shuddered at the veiled face so near their own. Such were the terrors of the black veil, even when Death had bared his visage!” (Minister’s Black Veil 13). He himself was very similar to them, though, because both he and them hang in the balance between life and death. So in essence, the dying people fear themselves; they also fear that their sins will be revealed once they die. The congregation does not like Mr. Hooper’s veil because of the powers that it enables him with.

  6. 1. Mr. Hooper's veil is meant to symolize secret sin. Everyone has secret sin, and it is like a veil that covers the face, hiding the true self. Mr. Hooper says, "...then deem me a monster, for the symbol beneath which I live, and die! I look around me, and, lo! on every visage a Black Veil!" Mr. Hooper wears the veil in order to point out to people that everyone has sin, and that people need to accept it and move on.

    2. The reason the people are so frightened by Mr. Hooper's veil is because of its deep darkness. Whenever the people see the veil, it reminds them of their own sin, which people do not want to see because they are egotistic and want to appear to be the best person they can be.

  7. 1. Mr. Hooper's veil is meant to represent secret sin. However, I don't think that he himself has sined, but that he is trying to prove to others not to be afraid of their sins, but to imbrace it and put it behind them.

    2. As I said before, the reason that people are scared of the veil is because it reminds them of their own sin. It reminds me of the eye in the Tell-Tale Heart. Whenever the man looks at the eye, he is reminded of his insanity. When people look at Mr. Hooper's veil, they are reminded of their sin.

  8. what does the black veil repersent?
the veil represents the constant action that people do when they have done something wrong. when a person does somehting wrong they try to hid what they have done, they don't know other people to know what they have actually done becuase they will be judged and looked at differently. most of this acting is done by the words that they say or the things that they do but if you look in someones eye's, which is a window into their soul, you can see what they are trying to hide from the world. which ultimatley, i think, why the black veil is covering their eyes. so the black veil represents people attempting to hide their sins from the world.

what causes the congreation to abhor Mr. Hooper's black veil?
when the people see that he is wearing a black they are cruious about why he is wearing it.and when they find out that he isn't allowed to tell them or that he won't take it off they get upset. they have always looked up to him since he is their minister and they put their trust in him by telling him their problems and letting him into their lives that they feel that he must do the same. and maybe they feel like he is betraying them by keeping obvious secrets from them.

  9. 1) What does Mr. Hooper's black veil represent?
i think that the black veil represents the sin of the world. i think that Mr.Hooper is a symbol for the people in the world attempting to hide their sins and that is what Mr. Hooper's black veil represents. i think thathe is also covering his sins but he is also a symbol for what everyone is doing so i think that the veil is a reminder that what you've done in you past can get hidden temporarily but at some time people will know that you are hiding.

    2) What causes the congregation to abhor Mr. Hooper's black veil?
i think that the people are upset because they know that since he is wearing hte viel that he must be hiding somehting or he won't be wearing it. so i think that they are so mad that he won't take it off or tell them becuase they might be afraid of how he might be hiding. they look at him as this religious leader and to know that their minister has done something that he constantly tells them not to do, they might see him as a hyprocrite. so i think they abhor his veil is becuase secretly they are afraid of the real reason he is wearing it and it is leaving them confused, and curious

  10. 1) What does Mr. Hooper's black veil represent?

i still think that the black veil represnets hiding sin and is a symbol for the people hiding their sins as well. since i think that it is both i think he is just a reminder to the people that this is what you are doing, but now you can see what it looks like literally when you try to cover the things that you have done in the past.

    2) What causes the congregation to abhor Mr. Hooper's black veil?

again, i still think that the congreation is mad with Mr. Hooper because he is their minister adn he's keeping secrets and they are afraid that if he does finally take it of or tell them why is he wearing it that they will not like what he has to say.
